If the contract timing had been off from the academic calendar, they would have closed mid-year because all of the docs left when the hospital gave the contract to USACS. If you come out of med school in your 40s and then do a 5 year residency, even if you practice until 70 (tough but not impossible in surgical fields), thats only 25 years of practice. Compare that with someone who takes the traditional route, who finishes training around 32-35 and can practice 30 years before age 65.
